Decided my current series would be about "RAIN" instead of the wood/trees. When examining my feelings about this last drought ridden/hot summer I realized that when it finally rains........well...there are a million paintings from my head alone. I've also returned to my original medium Oils. I had forgotten what an amazing, smelly, messy, vibrant and exciting medium it was. These are oils....maybe finished..maybe not.

Not sure I have the title of this new series figured out but it is based on the famous Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees" that I so loved as a child. These two first "trying to remain abstract but not quite pulling it off" paintings are titled Evergreen Jungle and I'll Never See. Hopefully done but they haven't survived the 2 week hanging on wall inspection yet.

Current Issue Palette Magazine. They wanted something "Unexpected" so I sent them all 4 of my series "Sugar Rush" I painted and poured this picture using that no-no color Opera and had great fun with it. I'm so pleased that Skip and Toph thought it "Not a design we have seen before"

Ruined Sandcastles.

Painting needed a more focused center and a cooling of the sand color. Intentioned abstracts are not as easy as they look. This finally finished piece is part of my "Water" series and about waves crashing into and destroying all those sand castles I built as a child. If you are interested in the process, the road traveled is shown below.

Honestly, I think this is finally the final edit. If you study the painting below you will see a major bullseye in the middle. Big compositional boo-boo. I was so intent on the "water" thing that I didn't see it until I had it hung on my wall. This still says water but without the bullseye.

Second attempt and managed to stick to my intention of an abstracted water painting. This 40x30 acrylic is titled, Sand and Sea or Sand Etchings or something like that. Also part of my intention was to paint the sand and the water. One of my pastimes when I'm lucky enough to be there, is sand castle creator.

Last week-end Austin Juniors 18 Mizuno volleyball team qualified for the upcoming Junior Olympics held in Atlanta during the last week in June, 2011. I should be a great time with these kids and families.

Instead of painting this weekend, I will enjoying the Mizuno Lone Star Classic at the Dallas Convention Center. This is a good wide -angle shot but still doesn't show it all. This tournament is a national qualifier for Junior Olympics and there are 96 courts that are used from morning till evening. Each court has about 6 matches...that's appx 12 games a day unless there is a tie...then a few more games. Three days of play. Imagine 96 courts, each with about 10 girls all yelling and screaming at the same time. Then add, 96 or more if the teams are warming up, volleyballs flying around. It is loud, competitive, energetic and so much fun. This is Lauren's last big tourney playing for Austin Juniors Mizuno teams and then she is off to college. I'm going to take tons of pictures of all my friends and many of these cute girls I've admired and befriended over the years. Go 18 Mizuno I might take a sketch pad....but every time I start sketching I get hit with a volleyball...so I might do the sketching at the hotel.

My orange acrylic on paper just won 3rd place at the Georgia Watercolor society XXXII National Exhibition. Maybe the fun I had painting this one showed. The bird is a very abstract cross between a Toucan and a Parrot....thus title. I have great fun painting mixed bird varieties.....:)

This painting had some movement problems......so I did some more work on it...... My most powerful memories of September in Eugene, where I grew up, were helping Mom do the fall canning, the warm days and nights and gathering the produce. It was a great time to live in the Willamette Valley.

I want to hang these two 20x16 canvases, Tide Pool 1 and Tide Pool 2 together to make the presentation more interesting. They are part of my ever ongoing Ocean/Beach series and this time I wanted the colors and values more subdued. The tide is out and the crashing surf is not too close, so the pools are quieter and calmer.

Many Faces of September, Breckenridge

Second in my September series. I lived in the resort town of Breckenridge Colorado for many years...lucky me. September in Colorado is about the Aspen. In Colorado, the colors start turning early in the higher elevations and up north. In Breckenridge, they start in September and we lived in a grove of them. September was also about a sprinkling of snow on the mountains, 4-wheel drive trips to the high country and pouring foundations. My husband was a general contractor and concrete doesn't like -30 so this was also a busy time getting ready for winter. Kids in school...............ski season coming. Great memories!

Starting a new series about Fall or September....not sure yet. The title of this piece is either, Oregon and September....or September Memories of my Mom. My memories of September in Oregon are warm and fuzzy and hard working. The sun was always warm and bright. The rain starts in November, but September is one of the warmest and dryest months in the Willamette Valley. My mother was always canning everything, tomatoes, peaches, etc. and she made strawberry jam to die for. I probably should title this, For my Mom. Today I wish I had a pantry full of the the fruits and vegetables she used to can. Cold weather and rain was always just around the corner.

This 40x30 Acrylic on canvas started out as demos for two separate art classes. First, for my class at Sun City, it was a study in line with added items here and there. Then I took it to our Critique/Demo class and used it as a base for an abstract figure demo. What fun! It reminds me of hours and hours of hiking on the Oregon beaches looking for treasures.

I'm working on a series "Sounds of Fall or Autumn" haven't decided which to use. Growing up in Oregon, September was a warm dry month, one of the few dry months in the Willamette Valley, and my Mom was into to canning and the trees were starting to turn with brown edges showing.......but mostly I remember it was warm and dry. This is hopefully the final redo. I needed to work on some of my shapes and edges.

Finally finished. "Grampa's Farm Twilight" I added the lines in the wheat field in the middle, added some more light highlights here and there, moved dark trees on right to edge of picture, toned down the farm trees a bit and added some soft clouds. It's finished.

I have a long way to go but I'm beginning to resolve the orange middle thing and I've managed to break up that green blog on the side. Besides being early evening, it is going to be Fall. That way I can bring some of the really hot colors into the foreground. Lots of work to do...but fun! More results coming.

Round Rock Leader, Sports page Oct. 27th. Granddaughter Lauren got her picture in the paper again........proud me. Georgetown beat us just barely and Lauren played "lights out" with 15 kills, several amazing blocks...etc.

New Series "A Good Day "

I've just started a new series and I have a million ideas. 1. Watercolor on 22x30 paper titled, Wake Up, it's a Good Day. 2. This is a finished demo that I started in class on the Element of Art, LINE that is also part of my new series "A Good Day" title is undecided at this point. . It's a 24x30 acrylic on canvas painted with many layers and glazes. Both paintings are very different because of the mediums used. Most of my watercolors are created using American Journey watercolors painted on a colored ground. This one was first painted with a peach colored ground of gesso, then I used the opaque watercolors and watercolor crayons to finish it. The large acrylic is hard-edged with bright colors both elements that work well with the properties of acrylics.

This mixed-media painting on a 16x20 canvas was painted while watching hours and hours of Univision's and Telefutura's 24 hour coverage of the rescue of the 33 miners in Chile. I was transfixed and continue to be amazed by the strength of the miners and the world's efforts to rescue them. I have started two more paintings on this subject. Paso a la Libertad

Finished Pink Thing....

Finally after some crazy names, with a lot of help from friends and family, this painting is finished. It was fun when it was a bunch of bubble gummy pink blobs and some of the suggested names were interesting. My granddaughter Dana had the best title. Easter Island was a double play on words as it looked like easter candy and the rock formations on Easter Island. BUT, the new and final title is Formas y Colores Calidos. I had to make many changes getting the composition correct. My original intention also returned and that was bright reds with a Southwestern feel.

Flying Series "Sails"

Another in my Flying Series. I used several iridescent pearl colors and also pearlescent opaque white blended with other pigments for the texture and colors. Placing these fun paints next to mat finish strong opaque colors creates some fun tension.

Beach Finds 1 and 2

Both of these pictures are the same painting. The difference is the light angle. I have been using several new types of acrylics, luminescent and others and they are fun to hang on the wall. At night with indirect lighting, they take on special glows making it very important where they are placed and where the pigments are placed during the painting process. Certain lights change the composition so care is important.

This painting "Beach Finds" is nearly, but not quite finished.

Colorado Series Starts!

It's taken me some time to come to terms with the beauty and amazing scenery in Colorado. I am one of those lucky people who has lived there and visited. This new series now begins...... Immersed 1, acrylic on 30x22 paper. and Immersed 2, 40"x30" acrylic on canvas. Abstract is the only route possible for me. Overwhelmed with the rushing water, the surrounding varied blue/green forests...thus Immersed 1. And the mountains......Immersed 2 I might have to tweek them a bit, but I think they are finished.
